Prince Christian Sound

Today we are cruising through Prince Christian Sound in Greenland.

A day at sea means a day at the gym. The gym is located on deck 8, over the bridge. A perfect view of what the captain can see.

The southern end of Greenland consists of many large and small islands with a complex network of narrow channels and fiords. Total length of these fiords and channels is over 280 miles. The southern tip of Greenland is Cape Farewell on the island of Itivdleq. Instead of sailing past Cape Farewell it is possible to make a shortcut through the channels. This is only possible from midsummer through late autumn because the sea is blocked with pack ice the remainder of the time.

I realized today that what I imagined Iceland to be is what Greenland is. I imagined that Iceland had very few if any roads and that traveling by land would be very difficult. This what Greenland is.

The weather was very nice with very little wind. This allowed the captain to get very close to some of the glaciers. Icebergs were everywhere. I left part of the ship in some of the photos to give you an idea of perspective of the view we had.

Water was flowing from every mountain that we could see. The temperature was in the 40s. The captain cruised slowly in this area for about 8 hours. Just before dinner he announced that he would be heading to our next stop at a faster speed to allow him to use the ship’s stabilizers. We would then be in a sheltered area and have a calm night before the ship’s tenders began to take people into the port.

We scored a 24. Not good enough to win. Roses carved out of wood are the new prizes. I miss Tomas from our last cruise who would buy a drink for the winning group. I think he did this to help bribe people into not complaining how bad his trivia questions were.

After dinner we listened to the piano trio. I overheard the violinist tell someone that he was asked to perform 4 days before the cruise sailed and was also asked if he knew anyone else that could perform with him. This explains the lack of preparation. So I was definitely wrong on the blind audition. There was no audition. He continues to misuse the word prolific. He uses it as it is some sort of praise of someone’s ability instead of a recognition of the amount of something. His explanation of why he started a tune with an E instead of an Eb was interesting to all of the non musicians in the room. The musicians were either somewhere else, shaking their heads or having dinner. I guess the disturbing thing about all of this is the mis information provided by this group. From George Gershwin’s sister Ida to the misuse of words and wrong notes with explanations.

The evening entertainment were the singers and dancers from the ship. A medley of easy listening and country tunes was presented. Good show. I laughed each time the lead singer spoke with his thick Scottish accent. I could hear every word he sang as clear as day but then he spoke and I couldn’t make out a word. I gave them a 9 this evening.
