Breakfast at the hotel was very good. I miss my cafe americano but I can put up with the coffee until we return to Krakow on Friday. Our train leaves at 9:01 am and it is a short walk from the hotel.
We have been on European trains on trips in the past but it is still amazing how well the system operates. The train shows up early. Butt must be in the seat by 9:01 because that is the time it leaves. 3 hour ride to Gdansk. The train did have wifi but the connection wasn’t very stable. It was still better than having none. The car we were on had 4 seats to one side with the isle on the opposite side. There was a door that could be closed off from the isle. Peaceful trip if you didn’t mind the woman on her phone having a conversation most of the trip. I didn’t know enough Polish to tell her to “stifle” as only Archie Bunker could say.
We arrived in Gdansk around noon and immediately went to lunch. We found a nice restaurant near where our room is but check in time is 4 pm. After lunch we went back to the train station to put our bags into a locker. I was relieved that we needed no coins and could use our phones to pay. The last country I can remember that we needed cash was main land China. Taxi drivers do not take credit cards (you can use an app like Uber). Better speak and understand Chinese if you go. Just a recommendation.
Danzig is what the Germans called this city. It went back to Gdansk after WWII. Polish history is difficult. The countries borders were constantly changing as they were always being conquered by other nations.
We did a walking tour and took some photos. The highlight of the day was the WWII museum. So much to learn from the country where the war started. Lots of video and pictures I have never seen before.
We went to a craft beer place for dinner near the train station. I went overboard and ordered both the meat pierogies and the sauerkraut. Yum!
We grabbed our bag from the locker and walked back to check in to our room. It was self check in with codes for the buildings and room. Nice place. Right in the main square.
